Forthcoming events
- We are holding a short project workshop and review seminar in the form of two half-day events to be held on 30-31st January in Stirling. These comprise an afternoon workshop on the 30th January on operationalising social science variables and using the GEODE, GEMDE and GEEDE services; and a morning seminar on the 31st January on the more general theme of the wider themes of data management and the contributions of the DAMES Node. Participants are welcome to attend both events or just one or the other. Further details and registration information can be found at: DAMES summary workshop).
Bulletins / Work in Progress
- New online services(Oct 2010)
The GEMDE portal service (data on ethnicity) is now to a large degree completed. It is delivered from a 'LifeRay' portal hosted at the University of Glasgow, from where other portal services linked to the Node are also available in prototype form (see dames.nesc.gla.ac.uk).
The portal serices for GEODE (data on occupations) and GEEDE (data on educational qualifications) have been substantially developed over summer 2010. They are now availabe for access via their portal interfaces, but please be warned that they are not fully complete.

Recent collaborative seminar:
On 24/25th November 2011 we held a 'cross-node' collaborative seminar using inputs from the DAMES Node, the Lancaster-Warwick-Stirling NCRM Node, and the E-STAT Node, on the general theme of using social science variables. Further details here.
- Training workshop materials online
A number of materials from our various training workshops (e.g. software command files; practical session workbooks; presentation slides) are availale online - see our page on workshops and training for links to downloadable material (most recent updates from Jan 2012)
Linked projects. DAMES has an input into several other projects in the e-Social Science domain.
The National e-Infrastructure for Social Simulation (NeISS) is a major collaborative project (April 2009-March 2012), funded by JISC, led by Univ.s Leeds and Manchester (the PI is Prof. Mark Birkin), in which DAMES staff will contribute to components of the simulation servives' data management facilities.
The e-Stat Node (2009-2012), funded by the ESRC and led by Univ.s Bristol and Southampton (the PI is Prof. Bill Browne), aims to estabish a major new resource for the specification and estimation of complex statistical models, in which DAMES staff will input materials on data preparation and pre-analysis manipulations.
Testing the GESDE portals. We are very keen to receive comments on the current versions of the GESDE Portals (prototypes which use 'LifeRay' portal environments). See links at our 'resources' page to get to these services. We hope to expand and improve these resource in response to feedback, so comments are very valuable to us.
Recent talks and outputs
- Nadine Dougall has given several recent presentations summarising her work in the Node concerned with record linkage of e-Health datasets (E.g.: Attached slides for "Health and social risk factors of Scottish suicides")
- Paul Lambert gave a presentation on 'Comparability of categorical variables in longitudinal social research' at the recent Society for Longitudinal and Life Course Research first conference, Cambridge, 22-24 September 2010. (ppt slides)
- Simon Jones gave a paper on 'A data curation application using DDI: The DAMES data curation tool for organising specialist social science data resources' at the recent IASSIST 2010 Conference, Ithyca, 1-4 June 2010.
